Things You Should Know Before Sitting in the Chair!

There are some important things you should know before sitting in the chair at a salon... You know all those nervous questions that run through your head? Well here are some things that you should be pretty clear on before stepping foot in a salon.

1. The price range- Most well established salons will have a menu, this will give you a feel for what you will be spending depending on the services you're looking for.

2. The salon reputation- Sadly a salons reputation holds very true. Don't waist your time at a place that you have heard negative things about.

3. Always go on a recommendation- Don't ever make an appointment or walk into a salon and assume because they are charging you lots of $$$ that you will receive a great service. When you see a cute color/style out and about ask who they go to.

4. Should you tip? How much?- Yes! Hairdressers work just as hard for their tips as a waitress does, except you tip a waitress 20% who brings your food correctly and don't want to tip your hairdresser who is cutting/coloring/styling your hair which you will be stuck with for months and everyone can see... Yes tip your hairdresser! Standard is 20%!

5. Do not wear a really nice or expensive top- As much as we try, sometimes color will smear or splatter on your clothes. It does happen, so don't wear your favorite top to get your hair done.

6. Time frame- Have an idea of what you want. If you make your appointment for a haircut and then say you also want highlights, know that your hairdresser may not have the time. Make sure that you set your appointment for the correct service. It gives your hairdresser the appropriate time to do your hair right.

2014 Top Styles and Trends

Every year there are new hot styles and trends. Here are some of my favorites from 2014

The wavy bob! This length is great because you get more body but you aren't committing to a short hairstyle. You can scrunch your hair and let it air dry, sleep on it wet, or use a large barrel curling iron to get these pretty lose waves!

Facial hair and a hard part. This has got to be one of my all time favorite trends for men!

Pixie cuts are super trendy right now. You no longer have the rule of since you're a girl you have to have long hair. Surprisingly a lot of men find this haircut to be very sexy! On the right women of course!

The soft ombre is beautiful. Years ago the ombre got very dramatic and harsh, but now it has come back to a very subtle color shift.Very pretty and romantic.

Hair Myths Laid to Rest!

Are you sick of hearing all the terrible hair rumors that continue to be talked about and feared? I know I am! Here are just a few that I hear all the time...

"The more you cut your hair the faster it grows!" - No. No, No, No! I think greedy hairdressers were the start of this awful rumor. Yes, when you trim your hair it takes off your dry ends which helps eliminate split ends, hence your hair doesn't break and is able to grow. But just cutting your hair does not help it grow faster! Most hair grows between half an inch to a inch per month.

"I only want three layers, my girlfriend says she only has three layers and I like her hair!" - OMG your hair is not a cake. No such thing as one, two, three, or even ten layers... You either want long, medium, or short layers. Period.

"Your hair has to be clean before coloring or the color wont work as well." - Having dirty hair actually creates a barrier between the color and your scalp protecting your scalp from dryness and irritation. That's it. Having clean or dirty hair makes no difference in how your color processes.

"You have to wash your hair everyday!"- Not true. It's actually good for your hair to have it's natural oils. Every three days is a great routine, if you can handle it. Doesn't work for everyone, but washing your hair every other to every third day can help your color last longer, and your hair not feel as dry.

"If you find a gray hair pull it out!" - This does nothing so stop you from getting more or less gray hair. Once your hair follicle has changed to gray it is what it is. Pulling them out just creates a look of split ends, and because gray hair is more coarse and dry than your other hair texture it will stick out ten times more. Leave your gray hairs alone! Or just get your hair colored.

I'm still shocked by what my clients will say at times, and who starts most of these rumors/myths we'll never know. But I try to share the truth as much as possible! What is a common hair myth that you have fallen victim to?

Quick Hair Tips

This blog post is going to be short and sweet! Here is a list of quick hair tips that are quite useful!

1. When blow drying your hair, hold the dryer so air blows downward and pull fingers through hair until mostly dry. Then section and round brush. Your hair will dry quicker and smoother!

2. Always round brush your bangs first and pull them forward, not to the side. Whether you have a full bang or side bang. It will lay better throughout the day.

3. Use a clarifying shampoo about once a month. It will clear any build up and keep your hair looking healthy.

4. Instead of using root lifters or teasing your hair for volume, use a dry shampoo or powder when your hair is clean or dirty. It is light and adds major volume.

5. If you are tempted to trim your own full bangs and can't get to the salon there is a trick for successful at-home bang trimming; Blow dry your full bang as you normally would. Pull your bangs to the center of your forehead and twist until its in a straight line. (doesn't matter which way you twist) Hold the hair and start to point cut into the bunch of hair from the bottom and don't go past the bridge of your nose. When you let go it will automatically frame your face!
